"If the Lord had not been on our side..."
I think of these words from the beginning of Psalm 124 almost every week. Already this morning this phrase popped into my head with thankfulness, gratitude, and relief after a line of cars slammed on their brakes, and hearing the squeal of tires on pavement from the vehicle behind me, I thought the trunk of my '98 Lumina was going to end up in my backseat. If not for God's protection, I could've had a very bad morning and maybe even been injured.
But while this phrase holds true for me even on a small scale, in many ways, it's the perfect summary for how God's been at work in my life.
Had God not been on my side and rescued me and changed my life 10 years ago, I might not be in jail or addicted to drugs, but I assure you that I would be miserable, depressed, still looking for purpose and meaning, insecure, greedy, arrogant, and angry. Not that some of those things don't still describe me in some way, but I can't imagine where or who I'd be apart from the grace and mercy of God.
The God of the Universe is on my side and He has dramatically transformed my life.
"If the Lord had not been on my side," God only knows where I'd be.
